AbstractTechnologies applicable at a field scale to mitigate soil and groundwater pollution by per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) due to the release of aqueous film‐forming foams are urgently needed. We demonstrate that modified bentonite clays as soil amendments can effectively reduce the leaching of PFAS from impacted soils. In batch experiments, the significant decrease (95%–99%) of leachable anionic PFAS, including perfluorooctane sulfonate, perfluorohexane sulfonate, and perfluorooctane carboxylate, was achieved in 1–4 days at a clay dosage as low as 0.5% w/w. A significant decline of leachable cationic and zwitterionic PFAS (70%–99%) was also observed. The clays performed the best in immobilizing PFAS anions, while granular activated carbon was effective in preventing PFAS cation leaching. Hardwood biochar had minor or negligible effects on any PFAS. The study provides strong evidence to support using modified clays as part of mitigation or remediation strategies to prevent PFAS from mobilizing on a field scale.Article Impact StatementThe study demonstrated that modified bentonite clays effectively immobilize various PFAS in AFFF‐contaminated soils to prevent leaching.

The comprehensive review synthesizes 64 empirical studies on communication and transactive memory systems (TMS). The results reveal that (a) a TMS forms through communication about expertise; (b) as a TMS develops, communication to allocate information and coordinate retrieval increases, promoting information exchange; and (c) groups update their TMS through communicative learning. However, direct interpersonal communication is not necessary for TMS development or utilization. Nor do high-quality information-sharing processes always occur within developed TMS structures. For future research, we propose a multidimensional network approach to TMS that incorporates technologies, addresses member characteristics, considers multiple communication types, and situates groups in context.

Research on the wisdom of crowds (WOC) identifies two paradoxical effects of communication. The social influence effect hampers the WOC, whereas the collective learning effect improves crowd wisdom. Yet it remains unclear under what conditions such communication impedes or enhances collective wisdom. The current study examined two features characterizing communication in online communities, communication network centralization and shared task experience, and their effect on the WOC. Both these features can serve as indicators of the likelihood that underlying communication may facilitate either social influence or collective learning. With an 8-year longitudinal behavioral-trace data set of 269,871 participants and 1,971 crowds, we showed that communication network centralization negatively affected the WOC. By contrast, shared task experience positively predicted the WOC. Shared task experience also moderated the effect of communication network centralization such that centralized communication networks became more beneficial for crowd performance as shared task experience increased.

This article takes the Guangdong Province of China as the research object and uses the difference-in-difference model to evaluate the impact of smart city construction on the quality of public occupational health and intercity differences. The obtained results show that smart city construction significantly improves the quality of public occupational health, and it is still valid after a series of robustness tests. The effect of this policy is stronger in cities that belong to the Pearl River Delta region or sub-provincial level cities. This study indicates that the central government should improve the pilot evaluation system and the performance appraisal mechanism of smart cities from the perspective of top-level design during the process of promoting smart city construction, which aims to correctly guide local governments to promote the construction of smart cities. To achieve the full improvement effect of smart city construction on the quality of public occupational health, local governments should implement smart city strategies in a purposeful and planned way according to the actual situation of the development of the jurisdiction.
